What Happens on the Call

Say you call after seeing a mouse dart across the basement floor. The provider will likely ask a few simple things.

• What did you see, and where?
• How long has it been going on?
• What type of home is it, and how old?
• Are there pets or children in the house?

Then they may offer to visit, or they may give you a few tips first. Availability varies, so ask what the timing looks like. Many providers can respond quickly, but it depends on the day and the season.

What to Ask an Independent Provider

Ask the provider these questions. Write down the answers.

• Are you licensed and insured in Pennsylvania?
• What will the inspection include?
• What methods and products do you use, and are they safe around pets?
• Will you check the basement, foundation and attic, not only the visible spot?
• Is the quote in writing? What does it include?
• Is there a follow-up visit if the problem returns?

Older homes, extra looks. If your house has a stone foundation or old repairs, say so up front. Ask the provider how they handle hidden gaps.

Before the Visit

A little prep helps the provider do a better job. Clear the area around the spot you noticed. Move boxes away from basement walls if you can. Jot down where you saw droppings, chew marks or insects, and when. Share any past treatments, too. These small notes save time and help the provider give you a clearer quote.
